Asiatic LionA unique state, blessed with a varied topography, Gujarat offers a great diversity of habitats for wildlife species and lots of opportunities to the wildlife lovers.

Gujarat's varied topography comprises land forms like the popular dry deciduous Gir forests, massive grassy plains found at Velavadar and the dense moist deciduous forests like those found in the Dangs forests. Besides, the state also has majestic landscapes providing shelter to rare and endangered animals in habitats such as the Little Rann of Kutch, wetland habitats like the Nalsarovar, marine ecosystems like those found adjacent to the Pirotan Island.

Gujarat has several wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, where you can see a variety of wild animals and bird species. Some of the important wildlife sanctuaries and parks of Gujarat include Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Marine National Park, Blackbuck National Park, Vansda National Park, Wild Ass Sanctuary, Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Porbandar Bird Sanctuary, Thol Wildlife Sanctuary, Narayan Sarovar Chinkara Sanctuary and Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary.

Inside these sanctuaries and national parks, you can spot wild animals like the world's only Four-horned Antelope, the rare Boralia species, Chowsingha, Blackbucks, Dugong, Nilgai, Jackals etc. The Asiatic Lion is found only in the Gir forests and the Wild Ass is found only in the Rann of Kutch. You can also see a large number of bird species, including both resident and migratory birds. Popular avian species which you can spot here are Saras cranes, Peacocks, Flamingos, Garden and Woodland birds etc. Besides, the Great Indian Bustard, one of the most threatened birds is found in the certain pockets of the protected areas of Gujarat.
