
The
Union Territory of Pondicherry is regarded as a unique blend of French
colonial heritage, traditional culture, spiritual aura and cosmopolitan
lifestyle. Pondicherry is located in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on
the Bay of Bengal coast. Due to its close proximity to Chennai, Pondicherry

The French arrived in Pondicherry in the early 17th century. During British
rule in the rest of India, the clash for the control of Pondicherry also
intensified between the British and French. The French succeeded in
maintaining a strong hold over Pondicherry in 1814 and remained in the
beautiful town till 1954. Pondicherry became a part of Indian Union in 1954.
The French influence could still be seen in many aspects of Pondicherry's
life.
Climate
Pondicherry experiences pleasant climate throughout the year. During
summers, temperatures may rise to a high of 38 degrees. Winters are cool
with temperatures never falling below 20 degrees. Pondicherry receives good
rainfall during the periods November-January and July- September. The only
matter of discomfort is high humidity levels which is common for coastal
areas.

Air : The nearest landing facility is in Chennai at a
distance of 165 kms. Chennai is connected with all major air destinations of
India. International flights also operate to Chennai.
Rail : The nearest railhead from Pondicherry is Villupuram
at a distance of 32 kms. Local trains operate between Villupuram and Chennai
regularly.
Road : Buses are available to Pondicherry from Chennai and
many other destinations of Tamil Nadu. The road distance between Chennai and
Pondicherry is 142 kms.

Pondicherry has good accommodation facilities in budget, mid-range and
top-end categories. Hotels in the luxury category are Ananda Inn and

Aurobindo
Ashram : Exploring yoga and meditation as paths for salvation, spiritual
leader Shree Aurobindo and his favourite disciple The Mother set up the
sprawling ashram in the year 1926. Aurobindo Ashram is the most visited
place of Pondicherry. Many disciples stay at the ashram and practice their
teachings. The ashram also runs different kinds of cultural activities.
There is also an educational centre which hosts lectures, screens films and
holds plays on different themes.
The French Institute : An impressive legacy of the French,
this institute was built in French architectural style. The institute has a
great collection of old French books some of which are very rare.
Overlooking the sea, Romain Rolland library of the institute has a huge
collection of 60,000 books.
The Pondicherry Museum : The Pondicherry Museum has a
diverse collection which includes art forms, Pallava sculptures, handicraft,
weaponry, an old palanquin and certain other interesting items of the French
period. The museum throws a lot of light on history of the place.
The Botanical Garden : The Botanical Garden of Pondicherry
has a variety of trees and flower species. But it is best known for the
aquarium that has an amazing collection of ornamental fish. Evening walks in
the botanical garden are a favourite pastime of many tourists.
The Churches of Pondicherry : The churches of Pondicherry
are known for their unique architectural style, having a strong French
influence. Infact, the churches have ensured that the town retain its
European charm. The church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception or Notre
Dame de la Conception is almost 300 years old. Our Lady of Angels church
preserves an oil painting gifted by Napoleon III.
Pondicherry Temples : Most of the Pondicherry temples are
very old and dedicated to Lord Ganesh. Some of them date back to the 10th
century AD Chola Empire. The most revered is Vinaynagar Manakula temple
famous for a golden dome and a collection of 40 beautiful friezes. The fire
festival held in the temple premises in July-August attracts tourists in
large numbers.
The Pondicherry Beach : The beach of Pondicherry is known
for its serene ambience and scenic beauty. Most tourists come to Pondicherry
beach to spend their leisure time. There is also a 4 metre high statue of
Mahatma Gandhi and French World War I memorial situated on the beach. The
150-year-old lighthouse on the beach further adds colour to it.

The exquisite local handicraft items are popular among tourists.
