mainly for the purpose of making tedious journeys through the desert land.
Since then camels have become the lifeline for the desert people, whose main
mode of transport depends on the camels only. Camel Safari in Rajasthan
moves from one place to another, following routes that were once used in the
ancient time. You can still have the same desert experience in the region of
Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Khimsar and Osian. Camel safaris from Jodhpur
to Jaisalmer to Sam Sand Dunes and to Bikaner are the most popular routes.
You can also take up Camel Safari in the Shekhawati region that include the
towns of Ramgarh, Nawalgarh, Mandawa, Dundlod and Churu.
Guidelines for Camel Safari
- Bookings and reservations must be made in advance so as to avoid
last minute confusion and hassles.
- Since the sun gets very hot in the desert, the best times for
safaris are in the morning and evening, even in the winter months.
- Remember, most of the camel safaris traverse a distance of 25-40
kms a day, you may need to plan accordingly.
- You are advised to dress modestly as the safari may pass, and
camp in close proximity of the villages. Cotton clothes and loose
fitted ones are best for the desert climate. Wear shoes and avoid
exposing your skin directly to sun as there are chances of getting
sun burn. The clothes that you wear should provide enough breathing
space to your skin to prevent sweating. A Sola-topee, the local
turban of Rajasthan or some form of head protection is essential for
the camel safari trip.
- Carry plenty of portable water and drink water at regular
intervals to avoid dehydration.
- You must carry a first-aid kit, sun screen, sunglasses etc. Also
carry a camera and binocular.
