Festival Overview
Desert Festival is a special feature of the Jaisalmer city. This city lying to the north west region falls in the desert belt of what is popularly called Great Indian Desert. The regional topography has a great influence on the lives of the people. Once in a year the people living here take a break and celebrate the popular desert festival, over the sands that lie far stretched. It is a cultural festival and sees a lot of traditional practices and performances. The festival thus reveals the dominant culture that people have been accumulating since the foundation of the city in the 12th century A.D.

Activities
Desert Festival is essentially a cultural festival and as such cultural performances play a major role in the celebrations. The festival, celebrated in the month of Jan-Feb, sees competitions like camel races and turban tying, traditional folk music, dance performances, setting up of crafts shops and many other artistic skills performed by the local artisans. Turban tying competition is one unique feature. The people participating in the event can be seen furling long bands of colorful cloths round their heads; the knots being included as a skill.

As most of the events are celebrated out in the open, over the sands; it has ascribed to the festival the name Desert Festival.

Where to Reach
Desert Festival is celebrated in the city of Jaisalmer. The desert outback give a special charm to the festival. In the backdrop of sand dunes all activities look more enchanting and magical. To observe the festival in all its vigour one has to travel to the city of Jaisalmer. Roads and railway network connects the place with several cities of Rajasthan.
