Introduction
The havelis of Shekhawati exist as grand mansions built by the prosperous
chieftains and trades people during early 19th century. The chieftains and
merchants had amassed a great wealth during this period and it was like a
custom among these families to built luxurious dwelling places. The havelis
are spread throughout - in many towns of this district. These havelis
provide a wonderful example of the fresco painted walls and open art
galleries.
Havelis at Shekhawati
Shekhawati is quite a large district by its area and houses many small
towns. In many of these towns are located the treasures of the place. The
havelis, one of the primary tourist attractions, are some of the best in the
world. The grand structure and unique frescoes make them enchanting. The
most popular of these include the ones at Nawalgarh, Bala Qila, Dundlodh,
Mukundgarh, Mandawa, Fatehpur, Jhunjhunu, Khetri Mahal and Bissau. Each of
these havelis has definite attributes that makes them differ slightly.
Navalgarh havelis were built by the merchant families and display the
finest frescoes in the region. The names of some havelis include Roop Niwas,
Poddar Haveli and Saat Haveli.
At Dundlodh Jagathia Haveli and Goenka Haveli are quite popular. The nearby
fort further attracts the attention. A palace hall called Diwan-i-Khas has
similar features.
Mandawa, a small town of Shekhawati,
houses a number of fine built havelis. Like Dundlodh, there is a fort at
Mandawa overlooking the countryside. The havelis were built by the local
merchants, the best one by a Marwari jeweller.
Jhunjhunu is also treasured with some great havelis and the much popular
Khetri Mahal. Khetri Mahal is a minor palace which is beautifully adorned
and decorated. The nearby Modi Haveli houses some of the best paintings in
Shekhawati.
Mukandgarh likewise sees several interesting havelis and a fort. The
havelis are grounded at many places in the town. These havelis feature some
beautiful paintings and art work.
One more important haveli is the Piramal Haveli. This haveli is built like
a palace and has several courtyards, pillared walls and corridors. Frescoes
and paintings decorate the walls. The haveli was home to Seth Piramal
Chaturbhuj Makharia, a rich merchant from Bombay.
How to Reach the Havelis
Shekhawati district is connected with road and rail networks with the other
cities of Rajasthan. In order to have a good round about the places a guided
tour is well recommended. Private mini buses and taxis provide this
wonderful opportunity.
