Introducing Mt Abu
The physiography of Mt Abu bears quite a distinction from the rest of the
state. The places features productive lands and a pleasant climate. The
place lies, comparatively, at a higher altitude and is the is the lone hill
station in the region around. The place is what can best be described as
Cool. The road that leads to the place is rocky and arid. One finds a lot of
odd shaped rocks piled along the roadside. Mt Abu is a very famous
pilgrimage centre in the state. The place is believed to have been blessed
by the sages and saints that travelled to this part of the country. Located
here are some important shrines and temples of Jains and Hindus.
Tourist Places at Mt Abu
The cool climate, perched hills and rich flora makes Mt Abu one of the
coveted retreats in the simmering lands of Rajasthan. This hill station is
one of its kind in the state. There are many places to see around, in Mt
Abu. The most visited places are ancient temples and shrines. Some of these
revered places, and tourist attractions are :
Dilwara Temples : Dilwara temples were built between
eleventh and thirteenth century A.D. These splendid temples are dedicated to
the Jain Tirthankaras. The oldest amongst these is the Vimal Vasahi temple.
This temple was built in the year 1031 A.D., and is dedicated to the first
Tirthankara. The architecture is worth the praise. Their intricate design
and the extensive use of ivory makes them look stunning. Lun Vasahi Temple,
dedicated to the 22nd Tirthankara is also noteworthy.
Gaumukh Temple : The
distinct backdrop of Gaumukh Temple makes it look more mystical and
beautiful. There is a sculpted cow in the temple compound and a stream
continuously flows to the overhead tank. The hill side, water streams,
gardens and the intricate architecture makes the site one great place to
visit.
Nakki
Lake : Nakki is a small lake with small islets that can be reached by a
boat. The location of the lake, the rich surroundings and amazing landscape
views is a regular crowd puller. Ragunath Temple, a popular one in the
district, lies nearby the lake. Some people, Hindu devotes, take it as a
sacred lake, as a reference has been made about it in the popular legends.
Sunset Point : As the name suggests, Sunset Point is a
place amidst the hills of Mt Abu that offers some spectacular sun set views.
The place lies amidst lush surroundings and forms a great place for an
excursion.
Museum and Art Gallery : The Museum and Art Gallery
features a great collection of artifacts belonging to the period when the
ancient temples were built here. The museums is housed in the Raj Bhawan
building, at Mt Abu.
Transportation Services for Mt Abu
By Air : The nearest airport to Mt Abu is the one at
Udaipur. It is about 185 kms far from the place. There are regular and
connecting flights that serve to connect Udaipur with the rest of the
country.
By Train : By train one can avail the services from Abu
Road, which is some 25 kms away from the place. The train services connects
Mt Abu with many cities and towns of Rajasthan and beyond Rajasthan.
By Bus : The road network that hooks up the place with the
adjacent cities and towns is quite good. Long distance bus services are
available. Important stations from which buses are available are Ahmedabad
and Jodhpur.
