Brief History
The City Palace at Udaipur was established by the erstwhile Maharana Udai
Singh, in the year 1559. The place at that time was no more than an
uninhabited land stretch. The Maharana chose a small ridge, overlooking the
region, as the seat of this palace. His successors continued the
construction and simultaneously, a good population got settled in the region
around. The palace, in a few centuries rose to its glory and a new city got
established in the state of Rajasthan.
City Palace - Overview
The City Palace at Udaipur is one of the largest in the state. The palace,
built in marble and granite, stands established on the nearby Pichola Lake.
The palace architecture is remarkable and features a medley of style,
including European and Chinese. The palace, as a heritage building, also
features the art and culture of the popular Rajput dynasty. The palace in
its entirety is a collection of many interesting compounds, halls, terraces,
lavish interiors and more.

City Palace is indeed one of the greatest treasures in the city of Udaipur.
The palace houses a number of smaller buildings, magnificent halls,
overlooking terraces, balconies, turrets, enormous gateways, gardens and
fountains.
The entrance to the palace is provided
through an enormous gateway called Hati Pol or Elephant Gate. The oldest
part of the building, one built by Maharana Udai Singh, features a courtyard
and is called Raj Angan.
The complex houses four major palace halls; Dilsukh Mahal, Moti Mahal,
Sheesh Mahal and Krishna Mahal. Each hall has been named and provided a
definite title. These titles, respectively, goes like Palace of Joy for
Dilsukh Mahal, Pearl Palace for Moti Mahal, Palace of mirrors for Sheesh
Mahal and Krishna Mahal for popular deity. There is a palace called Badal
Mahal, built on a rock some 90 feet above the ground.
One of the biggest temple in the city, called Jagdish Temple, is located
within the palace complex. The rooms of the palace are adorned with
exquisite mirror works, frescoes and paintings. The palace culminates at
Amar Vilas, the highest point which is further provided with hanging
gardens. One can have a good look of the city from here.

Air : The nearest airport is the one called Dabok Airport.
It is about 25 kms from the city centre. There are regular flights from
Jodhpur, Jaipur, Aurangabad, Delhi and Mumbai.
Rail : Udaipur city is connected with regular train
services. Trains can be boarded from Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Chittaurgarh,
etc.
Road : The road networks provides access into the city
from various nearby cities. Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mt Abu are some places
