Brief History
Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds, was built by Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799
A.D. This many layered palace was designed by Lal Chand, a noted architect
at that time. The palace, that looks like honey comb from a distance has
attracted the attention of the people and tourists for centuries now. The
palace was built for the royal ladies, so that they can view the daily city
life and processions from here. The presence of a lot of balconies
ascertains this fact.
Hawa Mahal - Overview
The five storey palace, known as Hawa Mahal, is primarily a facade, built
in a very characteristic style. This harem has been built with sandstone and
that gives it a very colorful outlook. The architecture is typically
Rajputana, yet its unique structure makes it stand out from other buildings.
The delicate work and symmetry makes it one of the fascinating things to see
around. The whole thing looks like some theatre or movie set which will soon
collapse.
