Brief History
Lake Palace was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II, in the year 1754. The
Maharana during those days had very cordial relations with the Mughal kings.
The Maharana's predecessors, seeking an opportunity, invited the local
craftsmen who were responsible for making some great buildings for the
Mughals. There was not any other better place other than this small island,
on which the palace stands today. The palace, once built, served as the
summer resort for Maharana's successors. This marvellous palace in the
twentieth century evolved into a luxury resort hotel. Now in contract with
Indian hotels, the palace is managed by the Taj Group of Hotels.
Lake Palace - Overview
Udaipur is bounded in the west by Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar. Lake
Pichola is spread more towards the south west of the city. In the middle of
this lake is a small island called Jagniwas Island. The Jagniwas Island, as
it exists at present, is what people know as the Lake Palace. The palace
represents a luxury resort in the middle of the lake at Udaipur, accessible
by boat or a chopper. This private residence of the royal family of Mewar is
one of the world's widely acclaimed luxury hotels. The floating palace,
overlooking the distant city, in the deep blue waters of the lake is one
site tourists do not easily forget.
What's So Special
The unique location is the key factor of the beautiful lake palace.
Floating in the clear water, cut off from the rest of the city and
approached by a boat makes it the most romantic place around. Such is the
beauty of the place that it got featured in one of the James Bond movies.
With ripples in the water and the magnificent reflection of the palace one
has very little chances of resisting the charm.
The palace, like many other princely
constructions, features the grandiosity of the place. The palace houses 83
rooms, including the regal suites. These rooms are furnished with the best
available in Rajasthan - there is exquisite furniture, textiles, handicrafts
and more. The architecture resembles popular Rajputana and Mughal style.
Besides elegant rooms, there are banquet rooms, bars, restaurants and even a
swimming pool.
The rooms of the palace are known to provide some breath taking views of
the surrounding lake. The palace hotel is one of the most romantic places in
the state and at large.
