Rajasthan Wildlife
With a not so favourable climate and topography it may be hard to imagine
any wildlife at all in the Rajasthan state. But, as they say fact is
stranger than fiction - the state is bestowed with rich flora and fauna that
flourish in various national parks and sanctuaries. Laid down in the state
are some of the best animal retreats that were once the favorite game
resorts of the Maharajas. Numerous species are supported by the arid
forests, wetlands and grasslands of Rajasthan.
The forests and the parks supports many rare species of birds and animals.
Most noted among these places are the wetlands. The regions features one of
the best bird sanctuaries in the world. Tourists, photographers,
environmentalists, bird lovers sometimes travel long distances to have a
peek at the avian population. Amongst mammals the diurnal tigers are the
real crowd pullers. The forests also provide cover to many other large cat
species.
The grasslands of Mt Abu, wetlands of Bharatpur and the forests of Aravali
are some of the places that give space to the wildlife. It is at these
places that the best of the wildlife reserves of Rajasthan are established.
These protected areas provides ample opportunities to spot the wild species.
Spread over the region are two famous national parks and a dozen of small
sanctuaries.
